 TSMC forms IoT task force

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), in view of large market potential for the Internet of Things (IoT), has organized an IoT task force led by its co-CEO CC Wei, according to industry sources.

With members coming from various divisions, including manufacturing process, research and development, strategy development and marketing, the task force aims to develop various specialized manufacturing processes, from 0.35/0.25/0.18-micron to 90/65/50/40nm nodes and embedded flash manufacturing technologies in order to meet growing demand from the IoT sector.

TSMC has also come out with an ultra-low power (ULP) platform, and plans to discuss with chipset solution suppliers including Qualcomm and MediaTek to formulate standard specifications and technologies for IoT devices.

The planned IoT technologies will not only apply to smartphones and smartwatches, but also in-car devices, household appliances, big data centers and communities.

The size of the IoT market is expected to top US$328 billion by 2020, according to Gartner. On the top of the market is the big data information and customer analysis worth about US$262 billion, followed by cloud computing, data centers and storage at US$18 billion, and wireless transmission and networking systems at US$17 billion.

Makers in Taiwan's semiconductor industry combined are expected to land orders worth about US$31 billion, according to an industry estimate.
